How to read a license
Four lines worth reading before you put this contractor on the job.

Status. Status shows whether the license is active today, as of the file date. Active, expired, and suspended are labeled in words. Anything else is marked unknown rather than guessed.

Bond. The surety company and the amount listed for this license. Worth seeing on a bid. It isn't a quote, and it isn't a promise the bond is still in force this hour.

Workers' comp. The insurer, the policy number, and the policy dates, matched to this license. You can see that coverage is listed before you sign.
- 04
Expiration. When it was issued and when it expires. A license can stay in the file for five years after it expires, so a renewable one still shows. Cancelled, revoked, and past-that-window licenses are left out.
