What it checks on every sub
If a sub's license lapses mid-job, the general contractor carries the risk. These are the five things on the state file that change without anyone telling you. Bond and workers' comp suspensions are the two most common suspensions in the file.
- License status
- Active, expired, or suspended, and the suspension the file names, such as "Work Comp Susp" or "Contr Bond Susp."
- Classifications
- Classes added to or removed from the license, so a C-10 sub still holds C-10 when the electrical work starts.
- Contractor bond
- The surety and the bond amount on the license. A change of surety or a bond suspension shows up the next morning.
- Workers' comp
- The insurer, policy number, and policy dates on file, or an exemption.
- People on the license
- The qualifier and officers currently listed. When the qualifier leaves, the license has to replace them or it is suspended.

CSLB publishes a new license file each business day. With a weekly check, a sub can work suspended for most of a week before anyone sees it.

Where does the data come from?
From the Contractors State License Board's public license master, workers' compensation, and personnel files, which the board updates each business day. Subcheck is not the board and does not approve contractors.
Does this replace certificate of insurance (COI) tracking?
No. Subcheck reads what the state has on file: the license, the bond, and the workers' comp policy. It does not collect COIs, general liability certificates, or additional-insured endorsements from your subs.
What happens when a license disappears from the file?
The email says the number left the file and gives the file date. The free file drops cancelled, revoked, and long-expired licenses without saying which, so Subcheck does not call it revoked. Check the number on CSLB's own site before you act.
How do I add my subcontractors?
Upload a CSV with one license number per row, or add licenses one at a time from the lookup. Business names in the file are ignored; the license number is the key.
Does it work for Florida subs?
Yes. Florida license numbers such as CGC1523456 can go on the same list. DBPR's file has the status, expiration, and qualifier, but no bond or workers' comp, so a Florida email covers those three.
